DAY 1. Madrid – Miami – Cancun: Our adventure starts in Mexico

Friends, family,

Here starts our 8 month adventure in Latin America. In this blog we’ll try to bring you the highlights of our trip. Since you all speak different languages, we had to choose English as lingua franca. However, the two of us will write in German and Spanish from time to time...

Those will be our two homes for 8 months

We left Madrid on Thursday 20th, and landed in Cancun after a grotesque transit at Miami Airport. For those who have never been there, it’s like being in a mall without shops, where nobody speaks proper English (even the custom guys spoke in Spanish). Fortunately thanks to the fatties on motorised wheelchairs and the overwhelming security it felt like the US.

After an American Airlines flight in one of the oldest planes on earth, we spent the first night in a hostel in Cancun, close to a club that played loud shitty music until 8AM (bueno, a las 7 empezaron a poner temazos y casi me tengo que bajar a desayunar con una copa en la mano jejej).

 Nights in Cancun are... funky

Cancun city sucks. Period. Seriously, 40 years ago that place was probably one of the most beautiful spots in all the Yucatan peninsula, but today it is just packed with luxury (?) hotels and skyscrapers. The water though is crystal-clear, just like you’d expect from a Caribbean beach.

You think Cancun looks like this....

.... but it actually looks like this.

Nevertheless, we have to say that we were very positively surprised by Mexican food: lots of choice and not as spicy as expected - Ihr wisst ja, mit viel Knoblauch und Zwiebeln macht man mich immer glücklich :-) . Unfortunately we couldn’t properly enjoy it because we obviously were running late for the bus that took us to Isla Holbox (a small island located north of Yucatan).

We just got to this amazing island and will stay here for a couple of days. We found this new fancy hostel owned by a Slovenian girl and her husband, called Tribu. Its garden is filled by palms and hammocks and, fortunately, our six-beds dorm was empty, so we are going to sleep the two of us alone.

 Colourful Tribu hostel in Holbox

We won’t be able to update the blog on a daily basis, but will try to keep you posted as soon as possible. Take care and many kisses to all of you from warm Mexico!

...love your blog already...as I have nothing to do at work at the moment, but am still forced to spent 8 h a day in the office, you're kind of saving my day (to clarify: I'm a consultant and in the consultant jargon i am "on the beach" as my project hasn't started yet...and with your fotos I can at least pretend to really be on a beach...)
